Ideas x Lab and Roots 101 African American Museum Collaborate to Honor Enslaved Black People in Louisville Whose Names Were Lost to History

Louisville, KY - Ideas x Lab, a Louisville-based nonprofit organization committed to fostering social innovation, is partnering with the Roots 101 African American Museum to create an exhibit that honors the experiences of enslaved Black people in Louisville whose names have been lost to history. The exhibit will be part of the Unknown Project, a community-driven initiative that aims to uncover the stories of enslaved individuals in Louisville whose experiences have been overlooked.

The exhibit tells the Blackburns an escaped enslaved couple from Louisville, KY. They had been settled in Detroit, MI for two years when, in 1833, Kentucky slave hunters captured and arrested them.

The Unknown Project seeks to reclaim the stories and experiences of those who have been overlooked by history and bring them to the forefront of our collective memory. The Roots 101 African American Museum is dedicated to educating the public about the contributions, struggles, and achievements of African Americans throughout history.

The Unknown Project will include an exhibit at the Roots 101 African American Museum, community engagement events, and educational programming. The memorial will be unveiled on August 1, 2022.
